I grew up feeling different from how I might have felt if I had lived in my parents' country, where I might not have experienced discrimination because of my appearance. Over time, I have lost the fear of being ashamed of who I am, although I have sometimes felt excluded.
I've discovered that it doesn't matter so much where you're born, but rather where you grow up and put down roots.
My roots are part of me, but so is the country where I grew up, because it's where I learned to feel that I belong. There will always be someone who doesn't care about my appearance and values me for who I am.
